Give Your Designer a Break (We Promise We’re Not Mean!)

There’s a funny little misconception floating around out there about interior designers. Sometimes, people meet us for the first time and think: “Hmm, she seems quiet… maybe even a little unapproachable?” Or—let’s just rip the band-aid off—they assume we’re being the “b word.” Ouch.

But here’s the truth: most of the time, our brains are just playing catch-up. After a whirlwind day of juggling contractor calls, design boards, color swatches, supplier delays, and client meetings, sometimes all we need is five minutes of stillness (or a blissful latte in a cozy coffee shop) before we rejoin the world with our usual sparkle.

And let’s not forget—we’re often doing all of this while squeezed into tight-fitting dress shoes, with heels that could rival medieval torture devices, and 100 bobby pins digging into our scalps just to keep our “professional” hair in place. So yes, if we look like we’re silently praying in a corner, we probably are.

We aren’t cold. We aren’t distant. We’re just recharging—because being an interior designer is this beautiful blend of creative artistry and logistical mastermind. Yes, we can be bubbly and chatty one day, and the next we might look like we’re lost in thought. That’s because we are—mentally walking through a room, reimagining furniture layouts, or calculating if a sofa will actually fit through your front door. (Spoiler: sometimes it won’t, and that’s why we carry extra mental load!)

The thing is, designers are both introverts and social butterflies depending on the day. We’re the life of the party when we’re showing off your new kitchen, and the quiet thinker when we’re sketching your dream living room. It’s not moodiness—it’s balance.

So the next time you see your designer a little quieter than usual, cut us some slack, grab her a coffee or a treat or just share a smile with her. We’re not being mean, we’re just giving our creative brains (and feet) a breather. Trust me, after a sip of coffee or a five-minute reset, we’ll be right back to cracking jokes, swapping stories, and brainstorming how to make your home shine.

At the end of the day, interior designers aren’t just picking pretty pillows—we’re carrying the responsibility of turning houses into havens. And that takes energy, empathy, and a lot of creativity. So if we ever seem “off” for a moment, remember—it’s not you. It’s just us being human.

And if all else fails, coffee, a quick prayer and chocolate usually fixes it.
